South Africa's Banyana Banyana secured a commanding 2-0 win over Ghana’s Black Queens in an intense group stage clash at the ongoing 2024 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). Goals from Linda Motlhalo and Jermaine Seoposenwe were enough to see off a determined but wasteful Ghanaian side.
The match began with high intensity, and South Africa drew first blood midway through the first half after Linda Motlhalo calmly slotted home from the penalty spot. The spot kick was awarded after a handball in the Ghanaian box, and Motlhalo made no mistake, sending goalkeeper Cynthia Konlan the wrong way.
Ghana responded with urgency, creating several promising chances before the break. However, striker Doris Boaduwaa was guilty of missing three clear-cut opportunities, failing to capitalize on defensive lapses from the South African backline.
Jermaine Seoposenwe sealed the win for the reigning champions with a well-taken goal in the 33rd minute, latching onto a through ball and finishing clinically to double South Africa’s lead.
In the second half, the Black Queens introduced Priscilla Adubea, Stella Nyamekye, Nina Norshie and Nancy Amoh in a bid to inject fresh energy into the attack. Despite the changes, Ghana failed to find the back of the net, with South Africa remaining compact and organized defensively.
The result boosts South Africa's chances of advancing to the knockout stages, while Ghana now faces mounting pressure ahead of their next group fixture.
The Black Queens will need to bounce back quickly if they hope to keep their tournament hopes alive.
