Asante Kotoko came from behind to beat fierce rivals Accra Hearts of Oak 2-1 in a thrilling edition of the 2025 Ghana President’s Cup at the Accra Sports Stadium, extending their recent dominance in this historic fixture.
The match lived up to its billing, with both teams showcasing passion, intensity, and drama befitting Ghana’s most iconic football rivalry.
The Phobians took control early in the first half, pushing forward with purpose. Their efforts were rewarded in the 24th minute when Hamza Issah broke the deadlock with a well-placed finish following a slick team move. The goal sparked wild celebrations from the Hearts fans and handed them a deserved lead at halftime.
Kotoko emerged from the break with renewed aggression and tactical tweaks, and their pressure soon paid off. In the 52nd minute, misfortune struck for Hearts when Konadu Yiadom, attempting to clear a dangerous cross from Peter Amidu, headed the ball into his own net, drawing Kotoko level.
Barely a minute later, the Porcupine Warriors completed the turnaround. A quick attacking sequence saw Albert Amoah slip a precise through ball into the path of Kwame Opoku, who coolly slotted the ball past the Hearts goalkeeper to make it 2-1.
Hearts of Oak pushed forward in search of an equalizer, but Kotoko’s defense, marshaled by Zakaria Fuseini and Samba Oniel stood firm. The Phobians had a golden chance in the dying moments to level things but Emmanuel Amankwah's spotkick was denied by goalkeeper Camara.
The final whistle was met with jubilation from the Kotoko bench and their travelling fans, as they lifted the 2025 President’s Cup in front of a packed crowd. The victory not only adds silverware to Kotoko’s cabinet but also gives them crucial bragging rights in Ghana’s most fiercely contested football rivalry.
