The football community is in shock following the tragic death of Newton Opoku-Mensah, a promising young Ghanaian talent from Fortuna Düsseldorf’s U17 squad.
The teenager drowned in a Duisburg lake on Tuesday evening. Despite extensive medical efforts, Newton succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
Fortuna Düsseldorf said the club is deeply affected by this tragedy and has responded by suspending all training and match activities for youth teams from U9 to U19.
This move underscores the club’s profound grief and respect for the young player’s memory.
The suspension of activities reflects the significant impact of Newton’s passing on the entire Fortuna Düsseldorf family. The club extended its condolences to Newton’s family, teammates, and the staff at the youth development center during this difficult time.
Klaus Allofs, Board Member for Sports & Communication: “We are deeply shocked and cannot grasp this news. Newton was a young man who was living his dream and has now passed away far too early.
"Our sympathy and deepest condolences are with Newton's family and relatives, as well as with all his teammates and the entire team at our youth performance center.”
