The Super Eagles of Nigeria were stunned by the Squirrel’s of Benin at the Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire, on Monday.


 

The defeat leaves the 2023 Afcon finalists  to fifth place in Group C, with a slim chance of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup.


 

Club Brugge midfielder, Raphael Onyedika smashed home the opener for Nigeria in the 27th minute after finding himself at the edge of the box.


 

But Benin struck back 10 minutes later through Jodel Dossou who pounced on a  defensive mishap from Calvin Bassey.

Dossou placed the ball past Stanley Nwabali into the net to draw Benin on leveled terms.

The Squirrels turned the game around a few minutes later when Steve Mounie pounced on a loose ball inside the Nigerian goal area and made the 2-1.


 

Nigeria are now fifth placed on the table with just 3points in 4games, losing one and drawing three.
